What is direct cremation?
Direct cremation is a simple, dignified cremation that takes place without a traditional funeral service or viewing beforehand. Your loved one is taken into our care, all required paperwork is completed, the cremation is carried out privately, and the ashes are returned to you.
That's the whole of it. No rented chapel. No casket purchase. No formal ceremony required. Just the essential care — done well, done honestly, done quickly enough to let you grieve on your own terms.
For many families, it's exactly what they need. Others choose to hold a memorial later — weeks or even months afterward — so they can focus on being present with each other, rather than managing logistics while grieving.
Why families choose direct cremation
The reasons are personal, but they tend to come back to a few core things:
Cost. A traditional funeral in Orange County can run $8,000 to $15,000 or more once you factor in the casket, embalming, viewing, service, and burial plot. Direct cremation is a fraction of that — not because it's "less," but because it skips the parts you may not want or need.
Time. Arranging a traditional funeral takes days of decisions at exactly the moment you're least equipped to make them. Direct cremation is handled almost entirely over the phone, with paperwork delivered to you by email.
Flexibility. When the ceremony is separated from the cremation, you're free to plan a memorial on your own schedule — or none at all. Either is a valid way to say goodbye.
Dignity. Many families find that a private cremation, without the performance of a traditional funeral, feels more in line with how their loved one actually lived.
Everything you need, nothing you don't.

What direct cremation doesn't include.
We believe in being upfront about this. Direct cremation is a streamlined service, and there are a few things it intentionally leaves out:
A formal funeral service. There's no chapel rental, no pallbearers, no printed programs. If you'd like a memorial, you can plan one separately — many families do, at their own pace.
Embalming. Direct cremation doesn't require embalming, so we don't include it. This keeps costs down and respects families who prefer not to pursue it.
A casket. California law doesn't require a casket for cremation. Your loved one is cremated in a simple, dignified container — nothing purchased or rented.
A viewing. Direct cremation proceeds without a public or private viewing beforehand. If seeing your loved one one final time matters to you, a traditional cremation or funeral service may be a better fit — and we're happy to talk through it with you.
If any of these items are important to your family, let us know when you call. We'll help you think through whether direct cremation is the right choice, and point you toward other providers if it isn't.
