One of the more common questions we get is: "How do I actually get the ashes back?" It sounds simple, but the answer varies wildly depending on which provider you use. Some ship them by USPS (the only carrier legally permitted to transport cremated remains). Some charge a $75–$150 delivery fee. Some make you drive to their facility. We hand-deliver every urn within 20 miles of our Orange office. Here's why we chose to do it that way, what happens for families farther out, and what most providers won't tell you about how ashes actually travel.
What Most Providers Actually Do
When you look at a cremation provider's website, "return of ashes" is usually listed as an included service. What that phrase actually covers varies:
- Family pickup at the facility. Most common. You drive to their office, sometimes 30–60 miles away, to pick up an urn.
- USPS Priority Mail. The only common carrier legally allowed to ship cremated remains. Usually included. Takes 2–3 days within California.
- Local courier or delivery service. Usually an additional $75–$150 fee, and — importantly — it's a third-party service. Not someone from the cremation company.
- Hand-delivery by staff. Rare. Usually an additional fee. Sometimes offered as a "premium" service.
Why We Do Personal Delivery Within 20 Miles
Everything within a roughly 20-mile radius of our office in Orange — which covers most of Orange County, including Irvine, Anaheim, Santa Ana, Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, Costa Mesa, Tustin, Garden Grove, Fullerton, and Mission Viejo — we hand-deliver ourselves. Not by courier. Not by USPS. By someone from our team, at a time that works for you.
Here's why this matters, in my honest opinion:
Returning ashes is a moment. Not just logistics. When we hand you your loved one's ashes, we bring the death certificate, the burial flag if applicable, the Presidential Memorial Certificate if it's arrived, and any personal effects. We can sit with your family for a few minutes, walk through paperwork if there's paperwork to walk through, and answer any final questions.
A courier can't do that. A courier is being paid to pick up a package from Point A, drive it to Point B, get a signature, and leave. There's no way for a courier to hand you a burial flag with the same care that someone who's been part of your family's cremation process can.
What "Personal Delivery" Actually Looks Like
Here's the process:
- We text or call to schedule a delivery time that works for your family. We can do evenings, weekends, and around work schedules. There's no fixed delivery window imposed on you.
- A member of our team (often me, or one of our counselors) comes to your address, in a personal vehicle — not a hearse, not a marked vehicle.
- We hand you the urn (in a velvet-lined bag by default; upgraded urns available if selected), any accompanying paperwork, the death certificate copies you ordered, and any veteran benefits materials that have arrived.
- We answer any last questions and confirm you have what you need.
No extra charge. This is included in the $1,195 direct cremation price for anyone within 20 miles.
What Happens Beyond 20 Miles
For families outside a 20-mile radius — anywhere in California or the U.S. — we use USPS Priority Mail, which is the only common carrier legally permitted to transport cremated remains. FedEx, UPS, and DHL do not accept them.
USPS Priority Mail with tracking is included in the $1,195 direct cremation price for anywhere in California and, for out-of-state families, at no additional charge to your destination. The shipping is secure, discreet, and typically arrives within 2–3 days.
If a family within our 20-mile radius specifically prefers USPS shipping instead of personal delivery — for privacy, scheduling, or personal reasons — that's fine too. We're flexible.
The Legal Bits: Why Only USPS
You might wonder why FedEx and UPS don't ship cremated remains. The answer is a mix of legal, practical, and historical reasons:
- The USPS Domestic Mail Manual (Section 601.9.3) explicitly authorizes and provides guidelines for shipping cremated remains.
- FedEx and UPS have chosen — as a corporate policy — not to accept them. This is their right, but it means USPS is effectively the only nationwide option.
- Cremated remains must be shipped in an inner container that is durable and sift-proof, packed in an outer USPS Priority Mail box. Marking is discreet — the box isn't labeled "cremated remains" externally.
- Priority Mail Express is available for faster delivery if needed, though we've found standard Priority Mail is usually sufficient.
What About Personal Effects and the Urn Bag?
Here's what comes with every return of ashes, whether personally delivered or shipped:
- The cremated remains, in a durable, sealed temporary urn
- A velvet-lined outer bag (dark navy — the standard style)
- Any death certificate copies you ordered
- Cremation certificate and cremation permit (originals)
- For veterans: burial flag if requested, Presidential Memorial Certificate (when it arrives — sometimes 6–12 weeks after passing)
If you upgraded to a premium urn, it comes with the ashes already in it. If you want to transfer the ashes to a decorative urn or scattering vessel later, we walk you through how to do that safely.
Why We Chose Not to Charge for Delivery
Delivery to the family is one of the last touchpoints in the entire cremation process. It's the moment a family finally holds their loved one again. Charging for that — especially when the ashes never left our care until the moment of delivery — feels wrong to me.
It also protects the moment. If a family is paying $75–$150 for delivery, they may be tempted to drive to our office instead. That drive, alone, in traffic, can be its own weight during a hard time. Removing the money question means every family gets the same care regardless of budget.
If a family lives outside our 20-mile radius, USPS still works, and the ashes still arrive safely and free of charge. But for the majority of Orange County — who fall inside our range — someone from our team will come to your door.
